Margaret - Residential Retreat Attendee
I came to Cambridge Writing Retreat for 8 days to work on my novel. I wanted peace and creativity. I found both in abundance here. I stayed in the newly opened Bothy, a practical, comfortable and beautiful space in which to live and work. It is surrounded by spacious gardens, all of which are available to writers, and offer plenty of alternative spaces to write and read when I wanted a change of scene. Host Gaynor Clements could not have been kinder or more considerate, offering home-made goodies including her excellent hummus, as well as several evening meals, all included in the tariff. She is an excellent cook! A writer herself, Gaynor’s passion for supporting artists shines through.
The whole experience provided a rare opportunity to slow down and think and write, free of distractions. Consequently, I had a hugely productive week. I will certainly come back, and I highly recommend it as a place for any artist wanting affordable, distraction-free time and a beautiful space to work.
Jenny – Day Retreat Attendee
I've attended three of Gaynor's day retreats to hit writing deadlines and each time it was a productive and enjoyable experience. Without having to think about making food, coffee or getting snacks I was able to knuckle down and find that rare feeling of creative flow with my writing. I worked in both the living room with its toasty open fire, and at the kitchen table where the waft of freshly made bread added to the relaxed ambience and sense of comfort. The home made brownies and chocolate biscuits are heaven. If you are feeling stuck with your creative work, or you struggle with home distractions then a change of scenery at the Cambridge Writing Retreat is just the tonic you need.

Sue Burge - Tutor of Nature Poetry & This is your Life - A Day of Memoir Writing
"The Cambridge Writing Retreat is by far the nicest venue I have taught in to date. Gaynor is so welcoming and makes both tutors and participants feel very comfortable and at ease. The writing spaces are beautiful: cosy rooms, a lovely garden and a huge and homely kitchen table. I felt very spoilt and well-looked after. Delicious food, good company and first-class accommodation. I would jump at the opportunity to teach there again."
‘Such a good day, energy and sparks with congenial people, inspiring ideas and nurturing food - what more could anyone ask? Thanks so much. I’ll definitely come back.’
‘The day has given me more than I could have imagined, so much more than a ‘course’. I will take away a feeling of being able to write.’
‘Gaynor provided a wonderfully safe and nurturing space - and delicious food- to help get the juices flowing. Thank you for opening up your home.’
Thanks to Gaynor and Sue....I spent a fantastic, relaxing day at CWR writing poetry, eating great food and enjoying good company. A thoroughly refreshing experience, exploring my creative side- beats going to a spa any day!
'I came to the Cambridge Writing Retreat on a simple recommendation from a friend of a friend, so I really had no expectations. Had I come with high expectations for a peaceful and nurturing retreat and/or ambitious goals for growth in my writing, they would have been well and truly exceeded.
I was greeted by serene nature and beautiful grounds and a warm and all-encompassing atmosphere the minute I walked in the door. It was pleasure to be surrounded by a diverse group of inspiring and like-minded people, talented tutors, artists and the gracious warm heart of Gaynor and her home.
In a mixed bunch of Heavily Humble Hobbiest’s, to Proficient Published Poets, there was something for everyone; the open and welcoming environment was wonderfully creativity and I believe everyone left full of inspiration….
……or at the very least, full of truly magnificent handmade focaccia bread!'

“There's something magical about The Cambridge Writing Retreat. The beautiful natural surroundings help you shake the daily dust off your boots and thinking as soon as you enter the drive. The house is spacious, warm and open, filled with nooks and crannies to hide away in and create. Gaynor is a delightful host - she really made us feel at home and looked after. It was a very special day.”
